Pub-up your poison

“Pub-up your poison” is a quiz pub tour that will bring together renowned scientists, UM students and of course the local people from Maastricht to discuss their favorite poison and toxicology topics. Where can you meet better than in a local pub with some nice local beers and bites! Throughout the city, 10 bars will be participating, each of them focusing on a different topic, presented by 3 speakers with short presentations in layman’s language. Students will act as a local host and moderate the debate. There will be drinks and snacks for an informal ambience, but also a pub quiz at the end that the student will present to make sure the participants have paid good attention.

The following topics will take place on Monday evening September 19.

Click on the topic of your choice and make sure to book your ticket as soon as possible! Capacity is limited and entry is first come first served.

Program:
The ability to maintain and grow cells outside the human body has been a truly remarkable discovery for the understanding of what human cells need to survive and how they work. This encompasses the world of molecular physiology (internal workings of the cell), disease states and toxicology. In the pub ‘de Servaas’ we will discuss some aspects coming mainly from the kidney field, i.e. the culture of cells from urine (how and why), induced human pluripotent stem cells (molecular cloning), podocyte cells (renal biological filters) and multi organ chip technology (aka humans on a chip, allowing many cells from different tissues to survive along side each other). Along the way you will find out a little bit about cell culture, renal cell biology, stem cells and microfluidic systems and hopefully have some fun.

Presentations:
Paul Jennings
Culturing human (renal) cells from out side the body, using pee and other sources
Cormac Murphy
Podocyte cell culture. What are they and how do you grow them ?
Ilka Maschmeyer
How to get a multi-organ-chip drunk (and hung over) in 15 min

Suddenly you wake up in a strange unknown place and you realize the last thing you can remember was dancing in a bar. What the bleep happened? What if you don’t wake up at all? Poisoning leaves no visible traces and the deceased can’t talk. Who is going to tell the story? An important part of that story is told by forensic toxicological investigation. This evening we’ll give you an insight in the investigation of drugging and poisoning, how the crime investigation is conducted and how the human body eventually can tell the lost tale.

The Topic “Medicine in water” will address a growing problem concerning pharmaceuticals ending up in our sewage system.
Pharmaceuticals are chemicals that are prescribed to antagonize disease processes. The human body metabolizes these chemicals, resulting in a more water-soluble compound, which will be secreted in our urine. This results in metabolites entering our “water” ecosystem, with all its consequences.
The three lecturers, which each their own specialty, will elucidate more regarding this growing problem.

In toxicology, animal experiments were previously (and unfortunately still are) carried out to determine the toxicity of substances. Because the ethical objections to this are increasing and because these animal experiments cost a lot of time and money, more and more attention is being paid to the 3Rs: the replacement, reduction and refinement of animal experiments. Our presentations will be about this ‘new generation’ of risk assessments. This includes testing with human cells in a test tube (in vitro) and computer models (in silico).

Alcohol consumption and tobacco use have harmful effects during pregnancy, but what about the exposure to other, numerous chemicals that surround us? We are faced with challenges related to pollution, toxic chemicals in our homes, the products we consume, the food we eat, the air we breathe… Yet, there are currently no guidelines that inform parents about the potential risks of chemical exposure. Instead, misinformation creates discomfort and anxiety in expectant parents. During the evening, the topic ‘‘Chemical exposure during pregnancy’’ will address the challenges of creating a safe environment for foetal development. Come along to learn more!
